Customizing Invoice

I see that there's an invoice_templates directory in the shop module directory. Is that the only place to customize invoice templates at this point and will custom invoices break on updates if I include one now?

You can create new invoice templates. They will not be overridden on the next update. But you should not alter the standard templates.
